The History of the Original Creek Rat
The Creek Rat brand has its origins in Topanga Canyon, California. Topanga Creek, behind the main boulevard in the center of the canyon near the Post Office, the Old Canyon Inn, and Joe’s Market, was a favorite hangout for local kids. It was a place to wait for the Corral to open, collect rocks, wade in the pools, explore the waterfalls, and enjoy the magic of Topanga Canyon.
During that time, the local kids called themselves Creek Rats. Denn Tezzier, the owner of Creek Rat, became known as the Creek Rat Cartoonist Kid of Topanga and was invited to start a comic strip in the local Topanga Messenger Newspaper. That is where the Creek Rat Cartoons Comic Strip was born.
The main comic strip character still lives in Topanga Canyon in spirit, even as the years have changed. Through the decades, Creek Rat has continued to appear in print, art, and special features, carrying forward the magic of the beach, the canyon, and the creek.
